Bringing Up Burrito
Today, Demelza and I tried our luck with Friday afternoon studying. Turns out we have a slightly shorter attention span on Friday afternoons, especially when we plan to reward ourselves with margaritas when we’re done. We got a few solid hours in before Ben came and met us, at which point we started researching local burrito joints on our phones. We settled on Benny’s Burritos,...
Yesterday, I was standing in the nursery, surrounded by newborn babies, watching huge snowflakes fall from the sky. It was so far outside my normal experience. Babies? Snow? Wha? The snow was beautiful as it landed on the trees outside the windows, and it was very satisfying to be able to soothe the baby who had been spitting up on himself all morning. When I met his bizarro high maintenance...
Man, I’m so glad I took advantage of the long weekend. Mine included Tuesday as well, since that’s how we roll in nursing school.
On Friday, I went to this bizarre party in the basement of a clothing store in SoHo, where apparently the Beastie Boys and Chaka Khan used to hang out. OK, pretty cool. Manlexis and I ran around with his big fancy camera, taking pictures of the crazy...
The Section
Yep, like I thought, The Business of Being Born affected my clinical experience. I’ve been railing about how childbirth should be treated like a natural process instead of a medical emergency requiring drugs and surgery for a long time, but seeing that documentary just fueled this opinion. My instructor sent me to the OR to watch a C-section the next day. It was the first surgery I’d...
If you know me, you probably know that I have really strong feelings about burritos. Every time I go back to California I make it a personal goal to eat hella Mexican food to make up for all the lost time in New York. The really sad thing is that there’s a Oaxacan place like half a block from my apartment. I went there a few times, and had some pretty good tacos and other non-burrito...
Last night, Leslie, Marc, Dan and I went to a trivia night on the Lower East Side. When we were walking over there from the subway, a little bit late, we were like, “Yeah, we’re so bad at trivia, we don’t need to actually participate, blah blah.” But THEN, we got a text from Leslie that said, “The theme is body parts! We’re totally going to dominate!!!”

I guess I do know somethin' about birthin' babies
I saw a tiny little person come out of a bigger person today! WHOA!!
Our preceptor came into our meeting room this morning, looked around, and said, “…Julia, you wanna see a birth?” I was like, “YES!” And she rushed me upstairs to labor & delivery, because the mother was already 10 centimeters dilated. When I got into the room, the mom seemed really chill...
It’s still kind of bewildering to me to see snow just hanging out on the ground, when I know it hasn’t snowed in at least a week. It’s not a lot of snow, just little patches of it here and there. They totally fascinate me, like the frozen puddles. I keep wondering if anyone notices that I’m staring at these cold-weather phenomena.
I also keep wondering how anyone finds...
Wow, tiny children all bundled up is the cutest thing ever. I’ve really been enjoying watching them toddle along with their bundled parents as I powerwalk to school. I’m gonna try to clandestinely take a picture of some of them on my walk to school, but for now the kid from The Christmas Story will have to do. I’ve noticed on the ten block walk to school in the morning, from...
Blogging from the SKY
Man, the future is crazy. In the year 2010, I’m sitting on a plane connected to free WiFi on my adorable little netbook. There are still screaming babies on flights in the future though, so that’s too bad.
I totally haven’t blogged about being at Planned Parenthood for my last five week rotation, and I figure I probably should since I’m about to start my labor &...
